Laser Communications

Why not RF?

Picture
Bandwidth for Laser Communications is 100 times greater than for RF so there is a much wider range of frequencies to choose from without getting noise from other nearby stations

Since Laser Communication is directed at a target, there is much less transmission power required. There is also less power loss than with Radio Frequency Communication.

An LC antenna is much smaller than an RF Antenna which means less raw construction materials are needed.

Due to low divergence of a laser beam, LC is much more secure than free-range radio frequencies.

Why not Fiber Optic?

Picture
  • It's not always feasible to lay fiber lines when you need them. For example:
  • Can't be used for extremely long distances such as between satellites and earth.
  • In combat zones where damage to optic cables could be fatal
  • In emergencies where communication lines need to be established very quickly.
